How It Works

 

The P90X program is based on a series of workout DVDs. The idea is you can do the full 90-day plan from your own home, and get in better shape than at the gym. The program also includes a nutrition plan for maximum impact.

One of the key aspects of this workout plan is their trademarked Muscle Confusion technique. The premise of Muscle Confusion is that your muscles are constantly worked in different ways. In doing this, you do not plateau at any stage. This is why you can accelerate to becoming ripped within such a short time frame.


The Structure

 

The workouts fall into the following categories:

Yoga: this section builds your strength and flexibility, and offers the calming attributes of a yoga class.

Plyometrics: High-intensity cardio designed to burn fat.

Kenpo X: Combat based workout that combines intense cardio and core workout.

X Stretch: A longer workout that encourages muscle repair and athleticism.

Core Synergistics: An overall body conditioning workout that hones core strength.

Cardio X: Low impact cardio that encourages fat burning.

Ab Ripper X: Focuses on the abdominals with the main goal of creating a six pack.

Chest and Back: Creates a definition for your upper body.

Shoulders and Arms: A strength based workout to build muscle.

Legs and Back: Combines classic lower body exercises to tone you up.

Chest, Shoulders & Triceps: A challenging workout to target a range of upper body muscles.

Back and Biceps: Designed to create impressive arm muscles and definition.

People who are already at a high level of fitness are encouraged to add in extra cardio sessions 6 days a week. These are called “doubles” plans.


What is the P90X Nutrition Plan?

 

The nutrition plan follows a 3 stage structure. The first month is a low carb, high protein diet that is designed to rid as much excess fat as possible. The second month allows carbohydrates as well as a high protein intake to provide you with adequate energy to continue the exercise program. Finally, the last month encourages complex carbohydrates and lean proteins to secure your performance gleans maximum results.


Is P90X Any Good?

 

The workout program has glowing reviews, and #p90xresults on Instagram provides impressive before and after shots. Even Victoria’s Secret models have cited the workout as their go-to program.

As with any workout, however, the results lie with you. As the program is based at home you are reliant on your own motivation to get you ripped.
People who like a strict routine will certainly like this workout style. It takes any guesswork out of your exercise planning.
If you prefer a gym based workout, you could always take the Muscle Confusion approach and shake up your routine. This is particularly advisable if you have found your results have plateaued recently.
