The Power of Green Tea | What Are The Health Benefits? Does It Work?

Green tea is arguably one of the healthiest beverages you can drink. It has been linked with health benefits such as potential improved brain function and fat loss.

#1: Improved Brain Function

Green tea contains caffeine, although unlike in coffee, it has a small enough dose such that you do not experience the jittery side effects which you might be familiar with if you’ve ever had one too many espressos!

#2: Green Tea May Promote Fat Burning

Several human trials [3] [4] have shown that green tea raises basal metabolic rate, this improving the ability for the body to burn fat. There have, however, been some studies which suggest that green tea consumption has no effect on basal metabolic rate [5].

It has been linked with the reduction of blood cholesterol levels, namely LDL (low density lipo-proteins) aka the bad cholesterol and blood triglycerides.

It has been reported that green tea drinkers can be up to 30% [9] less likely to contract cardiovascular diseases.

Given that green tea has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular related diseases, as well as cancer, it is clear that there are some benefits when it comes to helping you to live a long and healthy life.

A Japanese study [10] found that green tea drinkers were 23% (women) and 12% (men) less likely to die of any cause. It also found that women were 30-40% less likely to die of a stroke or heart attack, whilst men were 20-35% less likely.

Additionally, cancer, or tumour, is caused when cells grow uncontrollably. Oxidative damage can contribute to the formation of a tumour. Antioxidants have been shown to have somewhat of a protecting effect [12].

Several studies found that green tea may contribute to lowering your risk of several types of cancer, such as prostate [13], breast [14] and colorectal [15].

#7: Reduces Risk of Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is different to the inherited form of diabetes, type I. Type II involves elevated blood sugar levels to the point where your body becomes resistant to insulin, or is unable to produce it altogether.

Some studies [16] have shown that green tea can help to improve insulin sensitivity as well as lower blood sugar levels. Another Japanese study found that green tea drinkers could lower their risk of developing type II diabetes by up to 42%.

#8: Improves Overall Health

Green tea contains many different nutrients and minerals that can aid your health in many different ways.

It contains flavonoids and catechins, which work to protect cells in the body from damage and help with the formation of new, healthy cells.

Furthermore, green tea contains an antioxidant known as epigallocathechin gallate, which studies have shown can treat various diseases. It has been argued that this is one of the key reasons why green tea is so good for your health.
