What is Glucosamine Sulphate?
Glucosamine sulphate is a combination of glucosamine and either sodium or potassium chloride. Whilst glucosamine is the active agent, sulphate is the delivery method of this agent to our bodies so it can be absorbed.
Glucosamine sulphate supplements are commonly sourced from shellfish but can also be produced in a laboratory.
What is glucosamine?
Glucosamine is an amino sugar, which occurs naturally in the body and can also be found elsewhere in nature, such as in shrimp, crab, lobster, fungi and animal bones.
It is used by your body to make various chemicals, such as glycosaminoglycan and glycoprotein, which are in turn utilised to build your joints. This includes ligaments, tendons and synovial fluid. The synovial fluid allows your bones to freely move across one another whilst minimising friction and allowing joints to move without causing pain.
Where is glucosamine sourced from?
Aside from being found naturally in the human body, glucosamine can also be found in shellfish. Glucosamine sulphate is therefore often produced from shrimp, crab and lobster, though it can be manufactured in laboratories.
