Vitargo® is a patented carbohydrate derived from barley starch. It is different because it is made up of larger carbohydrate molecules instead of smaller sugars (e.g. glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltodextrin) found in ordinary sport drinks. Scientists use molecular weight (how heavy the molecule is) to determine the size of molecules. As shown in the table below. Vitargo® is hundreds and thousands of times larger than maltodextrin, sucrose and dextrose.
CARBOHYDRATE MOLECULAR WEIGHT
Vitargo® Pure 500,000 to 700,000
Maltodextrin 1,000 to 10,000
Starch syrup 250 to 1,000
Dextrose (sucrose) 180
How does Vitargo® work?
Vitargo® has a larger molecule size than sugars (e.g. glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltodextrin) found in ordinary energy and recovery drinks. Vitargo®'s larger size minimises its osmolality, which refers to how much water it draws in. Vitargo®'s low osmolality allows it to move through the stomach 2 times faster than other carbohydrates which tend to act more like a sponge in the stomach. Spending less time in the stomach allows Vitargo® to be absorbed faster, providing a near instant surge of energy into the working muscles, far superior to other carbohydrates. After training or competition Vitargo® recovers glycogen 68% faster allowing for an increase in performance of up to 23% after just two hours, when compared to carbohydrates found in ordinary sport drinks.
Will Vitargo® make me feel bloated?
Carbohydrate-based energy and recovery beverages can make you feel bloated. That's because the type of carbohydrate used in ordinary formulas act like sponges drawing water into the stomach, which can cause uncomfortable bloating and cramping. Vitargo® is a patented carbohydrate form designed to empty from the stomach faster and be absorbed in to the body more quickly. In fact, university researchers found that Vitargo® emptied from the stomach more than 2 times faster than a comparable beverage with sugars and maltodextrin (the type of carbohydrate used in many popular sports drinks).
Can I use Vitargo® before or during training or when I compete?
Absolutely! Vitargo® is a favourite fuel source of thousands of athletes world-wide during training and competition. That's because it is university proven to be the fastest fuel available. You can use one to two scoops before you begin or during training or competitions.
Is your Vitargo the Super Soluble (S2) variety?
Yes we use the Super Soluble variety. Vitargo® is made from barley and is considered a starch. In general, starches don't mix very well in water. We use Vitargo® S2 which is a super soluble form that mixes more easily in water than other starches.
Is Vitargo® sugar free?
Unlike most other sport drinks and recovery supplements Vitargo® is completely sugar free! That means you can enjoy Vitargo® before, during or after training or anytime and not be concerned about sugar. Vitargo® is made from barley starch and will fit in with any vegetarian nutrition plan.
Can I use Vitargo® to carb load prior to competition?
Definitely. In fact, using Vitargo® during "carb-loading" is common among elite athletes and Olympic competitors. You can use Vitargo in shakes and smoothies as a sugar-free carbohydrate source. Each scoop provides 50 grams of glycogen building carbohydrate. Many athletes use Vitargo between meals to ensure they meet their carbohydrate goals during loading and after exhaustive training so that they can eat normally during regular meals.
Vitargo® is manufactured using a patented process by Lyckeby Starch in Sweden. Vitargo® is a registered trademark.

I recently bought Vitargo Pure to supplement with my protein shake during and after workouts. It affects the taste of the shake a little bit but doesn't make it taste awful. I only recently started this so can't comment on the results.
Got this Vitargo Pure today and tried it straight after a brutal shoulder session! My first impressions is that when it touches water it turns thick... but then it is barley starch, so I expected that! I put one scoop into water (200ml) and shook itit hard, and it formed a semi gluteneous liquid. I just chugged it down, and apart from a slight barley taste it was fine! The key thing I noticed was no horrible sugary aftertaste like Malto/ Dextrose, and moreover no bloating 10mins after drinking! It's too early to assess results, but lets see if muscle glycogen is replaced as it suggests, when I hit back and triceps tomorrow! So far the taste is fine, mixability is okay by itself, and I have had zero bloating! And it's sugar free!Goes Well With:Water, and BCAAs!
I am currently in a bulking phase and this Vitargo Pure is the best form of carb supplement I have tried, and doesn't have any fat or sugars so you are getting the full effect of a heavy carb intake.
Vitargo Pure is a top product, mixes well into your post-workout whey protein making it thicker, creamier and providing a great all round shake.
The taste and consistency of the Vitargo Pure leaves much to be desired, but what matters most from my perspective is that it's a non-sugar based, fast acting carbohydrate. So, if you want an after-workout "treat", eat some fruit, but if you want a serious source of fast acting carb that won't hit your body like a sugar, then this is the way to go.
I have been using this product for over 1 year now and I am just about the order another tub. This time I'm going for the 5kg @ £59.99. What else can I say....
Just want to state i had zero mixibility issues with this supplement and i also mixing it in with protein powder glutimine and creatine all i use is a typical shaker with a metal whisk inside it its perfect really can't even taste the stuff when its mixed in either so please ignore the previous don't mix comments and actually try the stuff....... now getting onto the recovery aspect this stuff is incredible i used to feel groggy for 3 to 4 hours after my session now I'm ready to go about 30 to 45 minutes after my session its amazing this product will be on my shopping list for along time to come
"I absolutely LOVE this product. I use it for roller derby and it is the only product I can find that keeps my energy levels up during competitions without feeling ill or bloated. For mixability, I use lukewarm water to mix and presto! It dissolves much easier. I also add squash drink mix to give it flavour."
"To begin, I would like to say this review is about my own views on the product and I give an honest account on how I have found it as I know how important and helpful reviews can be online. After reading the great reviews for this product on the website, I thought I'd give it a go. Now, as you can save money buying in bulk I thought right I'll get the 5kg pack. However, the first time i tried it before and during my workout I was disappointed, but I thought no give it a chance and maybe my body just needs to get used to it for a while. A few weeks later and I have to say it doesn't do anything for me even when following the instructions on the bag. I trained last 2 sessions without it and I still did my usual workout with no change, I didn't feel weak or lose any strength. My conclusion is nothing can beat a nice clean diet of normal protein carbs and making sure you get enough intake during the day. In addition, I was greatly disappointed you don't get a scoop with a 5kg bag, I mean what is it with that? they are just 59p. I had to buy one in a seperate order and wish I hadn't now as I won't be buying this again. Final thought: I believe some people may find it works but maybe its all psychological? who knows I'm no scientist or psychologist but it certainly hasn't lived up to its name for me and I prefer to live in the real world where you get real true benefits from a supplement. So I'm in the middle on this one and if you do try it, maybe worth just getting the small bag first to see what you think."
"I used it once and got the results I wanted, as for all the comments regarding mixability, just use an electric blender...problem solved. You should also concentrate on whether it gives you the desired results rather than the mixability"
"this stuff is the real deal and is no way comparable to very poor waxy maize forget waxy maize its no better than white bread. and have had no bother what so ever mixing this stuff. i think people out there just like moaning for the sake of it ,"
I started using this a couple of months ago and found it to be pretty good. I take 1 scoop pre-workout with an NO supplement and the Vitargo seems to stop the mid-workout energy crash I used to previously get. Then I have 1 scoop post-workout mixed with my protein shake and it does seem to have a positive effect on my recovery. No problems at all with mixing it by shaking in a shaking.
"first time i used this product, i been taking a serving several hours before excercise and first impressions are good, as for mixing add it to 300ml water in a shaker and shake then top up with water and diluting juice , mixes fine for me."
I use this as my post workout shake use 1 scoop and add 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder and fill the shaker half way shake up then fill the shaker to the top and it goes down a treat !
"Been using this product for about 6 months.use it for muay thai, weights and i even use it whilst i'm at work to keep me going.Love the stuff.Obviously does not mix well unless you have arms like arni however quick solution, bang it in a hand blender or even better,Mix it with Ribena (sugar free of course). The smooth texture of Ribena mixes this stuff real quick.I cant stand the taste by itself so ive always used a sugar free cordial.Try it it works.Doesnt mix with robinsins that well tried it trust me!"
"Bought this due to waxy maize being sold out at the time i placed my order and thought i'd give it a try anyway. I always mix a carb in with post shake, but problem is this stuff don't mix. Half the product just sticks to your shaker and the other half is in clumps! Vitargo Pure Shh.. if you ask me."
"This is scientifically proven to be awesome. Simple as. Other carbs are inferior so don't bother, unless you like getting fat...\n\nThis carb is perfect for pre/during/post workout.\n\nI mix one scoop with 400ml of water, shake well, add whey protein isolate and you are good to go. \n\n"
"do martial arts and gym workout - use it during and after my sessions. don't feel tired, never have enough. creapump + bcca before and bcca + protein after. feel stronger than ever."
"just done my ultramarathon, and again try to use vitargo again for carbo loading and again got nothing from it and recovery(mildly)..but i know people who got great reports from it and people got great reports from waxy maize.. so whatever agrees works for ye.. i am staying with myprotein waxy maize"
"Ha ha, some of these comments made me laugh, just returned from my iron man event in the US, where waxy maize has been exposed as being no better than white bread!! Vitargo is the best recovery drink in the World, no hype just proper science, waxy maize is a cheap copy avoid, white bread is cheaper!!! vitargo still rules!!"
"does not mix, received mine a few days ago, mixes all clumpy and sticky, sticks to my shaker, even in hot water it doesn't mix! avoid"
i hae took it a good few times and it done nothing for me and use it for carbo load for marathon and mildly notice anything . i found the waxy maize starch by myprotein brill for loading and recovery better and cheaper
"Here's the deal, ive been using maltodextrin as my main powdered carb for about a week now, and noticed a bloated stomach was constantly present. I (skeptically!) changed to MyProteins Vitargo out of curiosity.\n\nI have to say that this product is fantastic. After one day of supplementing with this my stomach flattened out again, it genuinely does seem to draw the water out the stomach and into the lean tissue. \n\nI shall finish the supply i have then order a bigger pot - its great stuff!"
"HI, excellent product have been using for months nows. Vitargo is 130% faster in leaving the stomach, has 68% better glycogen refueling, and up to 23% better performance in your next work out, and also gives a 178% greater reponse than anything else researched!!"
Fantastic product. I bought 1kg and mixed with my protein flavouring berry blast (50g). I found this makes a perfect sports drink at a fraction of the cost of retail products containing vitargo. I mix 1 scoop with 750ml water. Great for training. Well done MY PROEIN
I have been using this product for a while now and seem to be experiencing good results. Take with pwo shake. I would strongly agree this needs to be mixed in plenty of water (i also add robinsons) otherwise it goes incredibly thick especially at the bottom. Taste is fine have no probs there. It does seem to be giving good recovery results though and i would strongly recomend. I am however considering going onto waxy maise starch for a while as it's slightly cheaper i was just wondering if there is actually much difference between the two?\nGreat work mp on another great product.
"I use this as my post work out drink. It's great, stops the shakes normally by the time I've driven the two mile home. There is no sweet taste (unlike maltodextrin) and you get more for your money.\nOne downside is that when added to water, it is VERY thick! Use PLENTY of water (I fill a whole shaker worth of water, and its drinkable). Also, the taste is a little off putting (it tastes like flour water), hence the 4*. But I'm sure that adding a flavour would make it much more manageable.\n"
