During sleep, when it is impractical to consume food or drink, your body will be in starvation mode and may start to break down muscle tissue. This could have a negative impact on both recovery and performance. As a result, a slow release protein can be perfect for recovery throughout the night.
Unlike whey, Myprotein Micellar Casein is a slow release protein derived from milk. Casein can take up to 6 hours to completely digest and be utilised, which means that it can drip feed your muscles with a tapered supply of amino acids over a prolonged period of time. This makes Micellar Casein the perfect product for between meals or pre-bed. Each serving boasts an incredible nutritional profile with 26g of protein and only 1.2g of carbohydrates and 0.5g of fat.
This protein source hosts a complete amino acid profile and contains branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) which are the building blocks for new proteins. Micellar Casein delivers 26g of slowly-absorbed protein per serving which may vastly improve your night-time recovery alongside contributing to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. With minimal fat and carbohydrates, this product certainly compliments the desired goals of a calorie-controlled diet.
Micellar Casein is an excellent source of protein for any individual, from recreational gym-goers to ultra-marathon runners who are looking to increase their daily protein intake to contribute to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. As a dietary supplement, we recommend consuming before bed with milk or between meals with water, 2-3 times per day.
Please note that the labelling on this product is provided in English as a minimum. French, Italian, German, Spanish, Danish, Swedish and Finnish may also be present on a product by product basis.
Add 7-10oz of water or milk into our shaker (the less liquid the thicker the shake will be). Then add 30g, shake and consume. Use just before bedtime for optimum results, but can also be taken between meals or 2-3 times a day.

Wonderfully priced casein that mixes well. The price beats my previous US supplier hands down in terms of shipping and product cost. The product itself has been really effective in recovery and muscle growth and i am speaking as a heavy user, around 3-4 scoops of casein per day. I have tried all kinds of brand including the Tub ones from big companies in the US but they don't compare in digestibility an effectiveness. There are 3 natural flavors that i have downed 5kg of each flavour so far. I'll list them briefly regarding taste and mix-ability. Vanilla- Mixes really well with water, almost no foam and a pleasant smell Banana-Mixes well with water, however it foams up quite abit and can be a little hard to drink at the end. Pleasant smell too. Chocolate- mixes well with water, no foam and has a smell that is not so pleasant. Taste wise for these 3 flavours are excellent. For the reasons above i give 4 stars. MP needs to provide an all natural flavour and sweetening using stevia to sweetened to earn the last star. It's the way to go forward, MP please do it like the impact whey series. If you find this helpful like this review and bump it to the top so that others will be able to read it .:)Goes Well With:water and whey
I love to eat my protein sources and have been making casein cookie dough with the unflavoured product and flavdrops, it's delicious and a great way to get your protein in and a dessert that requires no cooking or time. Recipe below if you want to try it, you won't be disappointed: 50g unflavoured casein 15g nut butter of choice 15g cookie butter (if I don't have any I double up the nut butter) 50ml almond milk MP Flavdrops (vanilla) add to taste Add a little of the almond milk at a time as you want the consistency to be that of cookie dough and mix it thoroughly . If I have some fats and carbs left for the day il throw in some chocolate chips. If you like you like it thicker try chilling in the fridge for a while. Goes Well With:See recipe!!!
I have been using Myprotein whey supplements for a few years now (ISO PRO 97 & Impact whey) and have found both to be effective e.g. they mix well, taste just fine and have proven to be an effective supplement. Up until 8 months ago I would take one of the above immediately after training to aid recovery and assist development of muscle tissue after training, however after reading articles on the best time of day and type of supplements to take I started taking a whey supplement prior to training. As I train first thing in the morning I find this convenient and have definitely noticed improvements in training performance and overall gains in muscle development. I admit the gains are not ground braking, but they exist and are noticeable. So I got to thinking and decided I would start experimenting by taking a Casen protein in the evening, and monitor the results and effects. First off this has certainly helped me resisting from snacking on unhealthy items such as biscuits and cakes etc in the evening, as I eat quite clean during the day and do get the cravings for a sweet snack in the evenings when I know the wife has them hidden in the kitchen cupboard. Secondly I have definitely noticed a difference in the recovery from hard sessions, previously I would be sore (DOMS) for a few days after a particularly tough workout, whereas now I wouldn’t say I was as fresh as a daisy the morning after, however I am able to commit to another good session the following day. OK, now the taste test, I choose chocolate, the taste is fine however does leave a little powdery after tang, but I don’t find this to bad at all as I am usually brushing my teeth and having a glass of water soon afterwards before hitting the sack. The powder mixes fine (I use skimmed milk) and as long as you use a shaker and spend 20 seconds of vigorous agitation leaves no lumps or residue in the shaker. Overall a good supplement that is steadily helping me reach my goals without braking the bank or making me chug down foul tasting concoctions that make me wince and give nightmares. Goes Well With:Hard training and clean diet
This product works effectively in regards to what you want a casein shake to do, it mixes ok, not as good as Optimum Nutrition's one, and it tastes ok as a shake, again not as good as Optimum Nutrition either, which in my opinion is the best one you can buy, this product however is competitively priced which is why i opted to try it out, you get 700g more with MP for the same price as ON, in this regard though i do think you get what you pay for as ON is a better quality product, this however is a workable low budget option.Goes Well With:oats, yoghurt, home baking recipes just not a good shake.
I give this product 5/5 on everything. Firstly, it works. I noticed muscle gain and fat loss since I started using it daily before sleep. I wake up feeling really well even after a hard workout the day before. Secondly it mixes really well with milk and tastes good (I use unflavoured). If you have problems with lumps in your shake try this: using a fork mix the powder with a small amount of milk first to create a thick batter. Once you got that smooth, add more milk and keep stirring. Add some flavoured yogurt or milk if you like. Hope this helpsGoes Well With:Whey protein Magnesium and zinc
I have no special qualms or advantages to this product. I've received it properly packed, and tried out a bit of casein in yogurt. I had no chalky feelings or problems in mixability like others (not that I care much about mixing). As for taste, I don't care about taste, I order my stuff unflavoured whenever I can, so no negative or positive points on that. As for effectiveness, It's most useful long hours post workout or taking it at night. You can consume it in the evening to safeguard your muscles when you're doing IF (14-16 hours).
Bought a 1kg bag of vanilla after reading everyone else's reviews and I'm glad I did as the usual next day aches/stiffness has all but gone since taking this before bed. Firstly, don't expect this to be as smooth/easy to drink as Impact Whey. On my first mix I followed the packet instructions but found it to be quite thick, with a lot of froth and with an incredible chalky after taste / texture which I ended up pouring away and feeling quite disappointed with it. After reading some reviews about this protein source on other forums/websites this wasn't anything uncommon and I noticed a lot of comments about how Myprotein's is the best on the market so stuck with it. Either use a blender or a hand whisk and jug and the mix is much easier to drink and tastes a lot nicer. There's still a slight chalky texture but you quickly get past this. I'm also using more water (roughly 400ml).
When I shake one scoop to 300ml water is impossible to drink that. Half liquid half foam. And the foam stay for more than 12h. How to drink foam
This product was delivered (default delivery option) within two days of placing a Web order. Great service. It's very light and 'dusty' in texture and so needs some care when handling to avoid creating great plumes of powder. The chocolate flavour is excellent - I just add one scoop of micellar casein powder to 40 g of porridge oats and then 225 g of just boiled water. Mix and leave to stand covered for 15 - 20 minutes to make a delicious just-before-bed final meal of the day. Cover and microwave (900W, 2 x 30 secs, stir in between) if using larger oats for a softer tasty chocolate porridge. Tweak preparation according to personal preference. I'm no expert in sports/muscle hypertrophy nutrition but published peer-peviewed scientific literature indicates that casein before bed can be beneficial to overall goals. I use it together with porridge oats at the end of the day to complete and balance my calorific and macronutrient daily targets . . . and it tastes superb as well! One very happy customer.Goes Well With:Porridge oats
Tastes really good but it's a mess to use, like powdered snow seems to go everywhere don't wear black tee when mixing. Would recommend getting a tub to put it in as well. Chalky mix but it's favour is really good and for a finish end up eating the foam. Stuffed after it so works well. Good product got banana favour tastes good. Goes Well With:Water and pour into tub to avoid consent spilling/powder everywhere
After doing a lot of research into this product and protein in general, I read an article saying to mix Casein with Whey post workout for maximum benefits. I swear by it now. You get the initial protein hit from the Whey and then this product slowly drip feeds your muscles for up to 8 hours after your workout ensuring you get the most from your workout both with size and strength. When mixing it does tend to froth up a bit but if you leave it to settle for a few minutes, it's fine. Really helps to stop the DOMS (Delayed onset of muscle soreness) meaning you can train again sooner.Goes Well With:Impact Whey and BCAA powder
Went for the unflavoured version of this stuff and can see straight away the problem with the foaming after shaking. Compared to other products the amount of foam left after shaking this product is crazy but there is a simple solution. I filled my shaker with 300mls or so of water and then added a scoop on top. I took a big spoon to the mix and gave it a stong stir for a minute or so. Result was a smooth shake with no lumps. Hope this helps.
Love this stuff for cooking with and makes a delicious fro-yo when mixed with Greek yoghurt..... Goes Well With:Greek yoghurt
Too much foam is produced with this product. Even if i prepare the shake 2 hours before gym the foam still stays there. other than that the product is good.
Although this is a good protein source and works well to slowly release protein to your muscles during sleep..the taste is horrendous..literally one of the worst tasting protein shakes i have ever had..but despite being critical i expect the taste is due to it being a casein protein and not a whey one. If you can stomach the taste then you have an excellent source of protein before bed.Goes Well With:Opt for water over milk otherwise you are drinking pva glue.
good product, but really..the mixability is terrible...
A little tough to mix in a shaker but done in a blink with a blender. Very smooth and tastes great for a casein drink. 2 scoops before bed and recovery has been much faster with aches subsiding much sooner. Not so hungry in the morning. Only tried the chocolate which I would definitely recommend.Goes Well With:Milk
This product is absolutely brilliant. I cannot yet say anything about it's effectivnes because i only had it for a few days, but i just had to write this review because this is one of the best things i have ever tried. I mixed this casein (Vanilla) flavour with 30g of almonds, 200g of cottage cheese and a just a little bit of low fat milk. Put it in the fridge for like half an hour or maybe an hour and had it before bad. It had absolutely brilliant taste. I really wish you guys give it a try!Goes Well With:Water, milk
I like this product, it helps digest high levels of protein really well for me. The only thing I'd say, is to maybe address the slight acid like taste you get with the strawberry, I mean, it's alright but could taste nicer. I'd have it again no complaints, but that's just my thoughts.
I've just use Micellar Casein for 02 days and I love it. The powder mixes well enough but shaking will cause it to make bubble on top. I will try to stir it then. I prefer one-ingredient-product so I chose unflavoured one. It may smell good but taste like nothing. The first time may be weird but I'm getting used to it. Anyways, it serves me better than any other casein product I've tried before. I used to be so hungry every next morning. Not anymore with this thing..
I purchased this product (chocolate flavour) but have found that the quality isn't near to those of previous reviews. I mix the power with water but find that the taste is bland and that I have a significant amount of foam which makes the drink very unappealing. I would hesitate purchasing this product again.
Really excellent to have an unflavored option: nothing added, just protein. The unflavored variety just tastes fairly creamy, as casein is a whole (for practical purposes unprocessed) protein, you don't have the chalky flavor that whey proteins try and cover up. Great product at good value.
I fancied increasing my daily protein intake with a slow-release drink to consume before bed, allowing a drip-feed into my system while I slept overnight. After a bit of online research, this seemed like a suitable product, and I placed an order for the banana flavour, as I'm currently using the Optimum Nutrition milk chocolate for my pre- and post-workout shake, and too much chocolate can be a flavour contrast and a bit of an overload for your taste buds. Firstly - be warned! This mixture is EXCEPTIONALLY light... It's almost like talcum powder. It's bright white, and no matter how gently you open the bag, a cloud of the stuff *always* puffs out and settles. If you're wearing black clothes, they'll need to go in the wash to get the stuff out, as it doesn't just brush off. My work uniform is black, so I always make sure I'm changed for bed before preparing the shake. The flavour is great - again, mildly synthetic, but what the heck do you expect? It tastes like banana, and I'm quite happy with that. I use a cheap smoothie maker to mix it up, and having read other reviews, I concur that the texture of the drink is strange - although it's a liquid, it has quite a "chalky" undertone. However, it mixes well, it tastes good, and it does exactly what it says. If you're picky about flavours or textures, then you probably shouldn't be shopping for protein-based products. MP do an excellent job of producing fine products, and ultimately, this is no different. Overall, I'd recommend this product for the price and service you get from My Protein. The only downside is the actual powder being so light - I would much rather have it supplied in a tub than a bag, as that would reduce the amount that's carried in the air.Goes Well With:Sleep.
After battling with the horrible foam this product creates, I tried mixing it with a scoop of whey, and hey presto, NO MORE FOAM!!!Goes Well With:Whey and water
Really good protein keeps me going through the night
This is a great tasting casein powder, I've tried the chocolate and banana and they both taste good. The chocolate is great for someone with a sweet tooth and gives me a choc fix! Goes really well with porridge in the mornings tooGoes Well With:Oats
Doesn't mix well and the unflavoured is pretty disgusting. Very chalky consistency. Not too bad if you add flavouring to it though, I thought it would be like the Whey Protein which is amazing. I only use this product just before bed so as long as I can drinking I don't really care. If you are going to buy unflavoured then some flavour drops are a must in my opinion. Goes Well With:Flavouring.
Great stuff, keeps hunger at bay during the night and mixes really well. Only downside was unflavoured tastes awful.Goes Well With:Milk
I bought this for my wife to have at breakfast as she is trying to lose a bit of weight. She has an extremely busy job and tends to snack rather than eat well balanced meals. She has now has this in a morning as a supplement to her breakfast and it helps her not feel hungry until lunch (when she would preveously snack) She also uses it before bed when exercising late to help muscle repair overnight. (I know there are better products for this job but she's not a big supplement believer...yet!) Overall its a good product. She mixes it with a little milk and mainly water. The taste is pretty good (natural banana) but it does tend to get rather frothy when mixed in a shaker. We've found the best way is to mix it and drink immediately, don't give it a chance to settle! The texture is a bit chalky but I think most casein tastes this way.Goes Well With:30% Milk to 70% Water.
Great taste, easy to drink when you get to the shake, does not mix well, foams a lot when shaken and i feel you may lose some of the protein content because of that. not sure i'd buy it again for that reason.
Glad it doesn't taste too artificial. Just the right amount banana taste so it doesn't overpower. Blends and shakes well
Recently improved grain size, much finer than before, which has improved its mix-ability. Generally a very good product and should be one of your base supplements (along with whey and creatine). Flavorless tastes the best (like milk).
mixing just as well as any other protein on the market and comparable to the top brands available but with the added bonus of being half the price for twice the volume. the unflavored version is nice because even if you buy the flavor power that is on offer the price is still a lot less than the flavored protein but allowing you to mix your own strength.
The product was delivered quickly and and on time. I had chosen the chocolate flavour, when made up with 200ml water it is still very thin and when shaken there is quite a bit of froth. The taste is OK. I have used it in with oats and unsweetened cocoa to give the oats some flavour which works well
This is a good product and I've noticed good strength gains and look better after 2 weeks use. Appears to be working well with a good diet and training 3/4 times a week. Only complaint I have is it leaves a chalky sensation on your teeth/tongue though maybe I'm not adding enough liquid?Goes Well With:Whey Protein, Green Tea Extract & Omega Oils
Cheap but tastes awefullGoes Well With:water and milk
Mixes very well, great taste - Chocolate flavour, I'm using it as my pre-bed shake.Goes Well With:Milk, Almond Milk
I recently purchased the Micellar Casein. I had read about casein protein indicated it is best used before bed due to it's slower digestion rate, which is exactly what I did. The price was great which meant I got over 2 1/2 months out of the 2.5kg bag. One serving contains 24 grams of protein , its also rich in amino acids. I also added one teaspoon of flavourless BCAA and glutamine powder to make it an even more powerful nighttime recovery shake. I found this really helped with soreness and increased recovery time. The nice thick texture of this product is good for making you feel full and satisfied before you go to bed , im a pretty tight diet and I found it helped me stop eating late at night and I actually looked forward to having one of these every night before going to sleep. Goes Well With:Milk Water BCAAS Glutamine
Poor taste and not thick but works
I bought 1kg and just want to finish it quickly. I don't feel like it is effective. I bought the vanilla one and it does not taste good.
Gets the job done nothing special but above average. I gove it 3 stars because I haven't tried anyone elses brand. Mixability is definitely 2 stars you almost need too much water to be honest. Goes Well With:Whey protein shakes (true whey) enhances Mixability
Thought I'd give it a try for the price. Mixes slow and tastes chalky. Disappointed as I like to buy British, but sadly you get what you pad for here.Goes Well With:Nothing
It is not as tasty and easy to mix as Impact Whey. Very foamy aswell. Haven't tried any other Caseins in past, so taking all those Cons as a must. It gets job done, that's all I am bothered about. So if you are serious about your gains, then just overcome yourself and deal with it. Goes Well With:Flav drops and skimmed milk
This has got to be the most annoying Casein i have ever tried and the reasons being due to the powder being so fine that it's impossible to open or reseal a bag without sending out a massive cloud of it and the same with taking out a scoop to put it in your shaker. The Taste: I tried Vanilla, the taste was ok, but it badly had that chalky texture to it, i have tried it with milk, water, smoothie form, yogurt (which isnt too bad as it becomes like a pudding) Unfortunately i bought 2kgs of this and can not wait to just hurry up and finish it.
Ran out of whey in your cupboard so you’re thinking of taking casein instead? Well think again. This stuff is lumpy, tastes like paint thinner, and leaves a nasty residue with the consistency of congealed halloumi. Fancy eating congealed halloumi that tastes like paint thinner? Then drink (read: eat) this. I’m opting for USN instead. Goes Well With:Not even the better end of a yardstick.
Bought two massive 2.5kg of chocolate instead of whey and it's awful so I'll be going back to that afterGoes Well With:Nothing
Very tasty, mixes very easy in a shaker, tends to froth easily though so not too much shaking.
I've tried several chocolate flavoured casein brands and my protein is by far the worst tasting. Overly sweet, and extremely saccharine and artificial tasting. I won't be buying this again and I will be holding my nose while I try and finish it up. Goes Well With:Nothing
Great product. Delivered quickly, tastes great and does the job!Goes Well With:Yoghurt Porridge Coconut milk
I love all MP products i have tried so far and love their normal whey protein. The Casein I have recently bought (strawberry flavour) is almost undrinkable. the taste is quite nice, but it feels like im drinking chalk. It mixes awfully, and the last 50ml's is usually all foam. I've dried mixing it with water and milk. Putting it in a blender with Milk and a banana has made it quite drinkable, but thats very excessive just for one shake. It seems like many reviewers have the same problem, yet many do not. So maybe certain flavours mix poorly, I'm not sure. Either way, there's not much research to suggest Casein>Whey Protein, and with it costing about 25% more on this site, plus the fact that it might mix poorly, I'd stick with the normal Whey. Dreading getting through the next 2.25kg of this pouchGoes Well With:Chalk
