5-HTP (5-Hydroxy L-Tryptophan) is a naturally occurring amino acid which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Increased levels of serotonin have been shown to help improve sleep and suppress appetite.


From an athletic perspective 5-HTP's ability to promote deep, restful sleep may prove to be the most important benefit. Sleep is an essential factor in the recovery process of the body after physical exercise. The regulation and production of several important growth compounds occurs during sleep. Growth compounds such as melatonin and cortisol are all regulated during sleep providing great influence on our ability to grow and adapt to exercise. During intense periods of training and competition athletes may also find that 5-HTP allows them to relax and reduce stress; a result of the increased serotonin levels.

5-HTP helps increase serotonin levels, which in turn has been shown to improve sleep habits. Not only does it appear to reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep but it also increases REM, so you sleep deeper and wake up less during the night. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with a variety of ailments, including insomnia, depression, tension, migraines and overeating.

It has been suggested that 5-HTP can also help with weight loss. One specific study showed the use of 5-HTP helped lower calorie intake encouraging weight loss in women who were making no conscious effort to lose weight. 5-HTP may also provide a feeling of early satiety when eating. This means you may not need to eat at as much food to feel satisfied, again resulting in an increased potential to lose weight.

Well 2 weeks on this stuff, didn't help me sleep or feel different but i got an incredible tan while 'lumberjacking'. By incredible I mean almost switching race from caucasian to ethiopian (5-HTP increases melanin)." This is ridiculous! It increases melatonin (a hormone) not melanin. Just goes to show you have to take with a grain of salt what you read on the internet. I can't believe the absolute stuipidity of people.

I knew this product would produce the effect I wanted as I have tried it before but I still applaud its effectiveness in weight and inch loss (could also be due to fact that I have become a vegan). I sleep better and my waterworks are more efficient, which is what I experienced the last time I took it when not a vegan and eating unhealthily. Excellent product.

I read some reviews saying how these tablets give you freaky nightmares I had one nightmare and that was it I didn't have a massively noticeable effect more a subtle deeper sleep I'm sleeping a lot better I haven't had a wrestles night since taking them so from my experience they work very well and with no side effects

The difference 5-HTP makes is small, but it is there, won't help me get to sleep, but I get up in the night less and feel better rested in the mornings, been looking for anything apart from pharmaceuticals to help me sleep better and it's early days but this does appear to be working so far.

I have taken 5-HTP for 3 years now. I take two capsules in the morning before breakfast (together with L Tyrosine). At breakfast I take B-vitamin to get the most out of the 5-htp. If I take 5-htp in the evening, my body gets restless and my sleep doesn't work well. My Protein has a very good price on their 5-htp. The product works very well for me - it is the most important supplement for me together with L Tyrosine. The products provide me with the basics - I get relaxed and filled with energy every day. I have taken a pause a couple of times, to see how the supplements affect me, but so far I have chosen to start with the supplements again. They make a difference for me. I convinced my wife to start taking 5-htp as well, but she doesn't see the same effect as I have done. So my conclusion is that the results vary, you need to try for yourself.

I got this 5-HTP with the Bedtime package and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I had a good sleep and no crazy dreams as many have stated. I have felt a difference in body fat and the scales are tipping the right way... down. This is a good product for cutting.

"At first I had problems with dosage, and best time of day to take, but I just worked tis out by trial, and error. I found best time to take FOR ME was 4/5 hours before bed, one 50g tablet gave me restless sleep, and nightmares, so I split a capsule, mixing half with water, and replacing cap on the rest. I found after about a month I could increase this to 1 capsule without the side effects of sleep disturbance. I have been able to stop taking a low dose Prozac I was on, and Amitriptyyline I took at night to help me sleep, which is just great as I hate using chemical based drugs if possible. I sleep well, wake bright, and HAPPY, ready to get on with the day, and feel I can cope with my other cronic illness better, as I am not depressed. Unfortunately I have been experiencing cramps in my legs at night, which is often severe, I hope it is not the capsules, but I am going to have a break from them just to see what happens. I still think 5-HTP are well worth trying."

"I tried these coz I've always struggled to get good quality sleep, my mind just comes alive when I hit the pillow. Anyway, 1st night I took 1 pill on empty belly about 10pm and it had me fairly quickly falling asleep so great start I thought. However the next day I was really drowsy and took didn't feel proper awake til about 10am. In the afternoon I also felt nauseous which is not like me at all. I persevered, tried another 2nd night and drifted off to sleep easily, very vivid dreams which is fine, slept well but again really groggy in the morning. 3rd time I took I woke up drowsy and with a banging headache. I felt almost hungover with the drowsiness aswell. I was also starting to have hot flushes like a menopausal old lady! So, ive stopped taking them now and may try something else, sleepmax perhaps or something rosea, i need to research ingredients. I may try taking these 5htp perhaps with a meal to see if that makes a difference. but not on a school night. They do induce good quality sleep but for me there was side effects that I don't like."

CAREFUL! I use all kinds of supplements and was happy to give these a try. They dramatically increase ability to sleep but make you feel awful next day. Would only recomend these to be taken on weekend or on day off as they make it very hard to wake up in the morning and leave you dazy for several hours after you wake. Not the best product in the world but I still love MP : - )

"Since coming back from holiday i was finding it hard to sleep, couldnt get off to sleep, and when i did i was waking up all the time, in the morning i felt like i hadnt slept. Decided to give this a go as its fairly cheap for 3 months supply, and jesus is it good, its nothing at all like a normal sleeping tablet, you just drift off naturally, go into a really deep sleep, and wake up normally feeling so refreshed. I can wake up in a morning and just get straight out of bed, awake and ready, instead of putting my alarm on snooze for ages cos im too sleepy to get up. I have NEVER slept as well as i do when ive had one of these, they have been an amazing help and i cant praise them highly enough."

"I am on my second tub atm. Have definitely noticed a difference in my sleeping, quality wise anyhow. I probably just need to go to bed sooner! lol. Dont take it anytime around taking zinc+mag as i was in a daze for most of the following day. I decided to start taking this product because I often have trouble sleeping. Pretty much as soon as I started taking this as suggested I have been sleeping like a baby and dreaming more. Which suggests to me I'm hitting REM asleep more often and for longer. Not sure about curbing appetite as I don't tend to wake up in the middle of the night hungry. For aiding natural sleep I would recommend it.
