HMB (Beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate) is an amino acid, but derives from the breakdown of Leucine, a part of normal dietary protein. HMB can be also found in certain foods like catfish, alfalfa and it is also a natural component of mother's milk, but is scarcely found in a normal diet. HMB was discovered in the 1950's and has been studied for several decades, but has only really become popular as a sports supplement around 1995.
HMB has been proven to delay the breakdown of muscle protein as well as promote tissue growth. Early studies have shown that HMB supplementation also lowers cholesterol and helps strengthen the immune system.
In a controlled scientific study, 41 male volunteers aged 19 to 29 were given 0, 1.5, or 3 grams of HMB everyday for 3 weeks. The participants also lifted weights 3 days a week for 90 minutes. The results suggested that HMB could enhance strength and lean mass in direct proportion to intake.
In another controlled study reported in the same article, 32 male volunteers took either 3 grams of HMB daily or placebo, and then lifted weights for 2 or 3 hours daily, 6 days a week for 7 weeks. The HMB group saw a significantly greater increase in its bench-press strength than the placebo group. However, there was no significant difference in body weight or fat mass by the end of the study.
As a dietary supplement we recommend consuming 1g, 3 times daily evenly spread throughout the day for the best results.
Add just over half of an MP small scoop (1g) to your preferred amount of water or fruit juice and consume immediately.

The taste is horrible please make this in pills. Used it for 2 days now and both days I found it very hard to take. Might try mix in juice next time. By the nasty taste it must work. Looking forward to see what it does :)

Agree taste is dreadful, makes me wince. Even when added to a flavoured protien mix or drink still taste the biterness.
Not the best of mixers. Other than that its a good prduct. I will stick to capsules next time avoiding the taste.

Massive benefits from taking this supplement. Suffered a lot from DOMS beforehand. Been taking this for 1 month now, a lot less DOMS post workout. Have also noticed that my strength is increasing faster than beforehand. Possibly due to less catabolism whilst training a 3 day split (limited recovery).

Started taking it along with BCAAs a week ago after 12 weeks of cutting. I stalled for 2 weeks and when I started taking it along with BCAAs and my weight started dropping again. I don't know if it's because of the HMB and BCAA, but there is some good research on it that proves that it may help when cutting.Goes Well With:BCAAs

I've been using this HMB for a couple of weeks now and I have definitely noticed a big improvement with DOMS.
Usually after a heavy leg session, I could barely walk for two days. Since taking the HMB 3 times a day, the DOMS are all but gone. There's still a "Good Ache" a few days after but nothing like the pain I used to get.
It could be that I'm getting used to the heavy training, but I suspect the HMB is doing its magic.Goes Well With:Fruit Juice

My regime (exercise and calorie intake) has pretty much stayed the same over the last month apart from using HMB (3times per day as instructed), and I'd say I've noticed more muscle and less fat on me. HMB is a brilliant and worthy product, especially for the price.
Even when mixed with water alone I'd still say it's very close to tasteless, however when mixed with juice it's not tasteless at all. It mixes very well in a shaker. I haven't been using it quite long enough yet to comment on effectiveness yet but all in all, it's a great product!Goes Well With:Water/juice/whey!

My protein shakes that I take during the Day consist of just one scoop of protein with 50/50 milk and water. However pre/mid/post workout shakes I mix them with all kinds of stuff. I mix HMB with a mid and post workout shake. It is a very fine dust is the only issue, just be aware.

I use this product first thing in the morning with my pre workout ,once I finish my workout, and at night time (with casein).

After taking this product for 2 weeks I do feel a lot fuller and pumped up, which is a great feeling. The one downside is that the taste is horrendous, but if you take it with a fruit juice it's not that bad. Would definitely recommend trying it.

- Taste is the worst I have ever had but you get used to it. Just stand by the sink the first time you try it - I warned you.
- Only way to mix it in is to put in the shaker and go nuts.
- Early days yet, but can help when taken pre and post workout. As well as morning and night.
- Fairly well priced supplement but not an essential one.

"Been taking this for 2 weeks now. Havent really had any gains from it. I take this along with protein and carbs. Then zinc & mag at night. Havent gained anything in the way of strength. Also a recent study shows that hmb can lower protein metabolism in the body. Therefore reducing lean gains. From trying this stuff out im starting to think that may be true. "Tastes awful but it works if you know how and when to take it. Best taken as a small shot with fruit juice and necked quickly. I read about this for many years and most reviews are negative. I read that for it to be effective you need to be taking at least 10g per day or not bother, which means buy the 500g pack. I have noticed a big increase in size buy taking 10 grams around 8pm. I train in the gym everyday around 3 - 4:30pm. It is claimed it is only anti catabolic so I was expecting similar results to Micelar casein however I have noticed a big increase in size, endurance, decrease in bodyfat but not any strength gains yet. I have been taking for 2 weeks. it is suggested to ideally take 5 grams 3 times per day so 15grams in total for optimum results. So morning afternoon and evening."

"i have used HMB and i can say that this product is a great product, a miracle i say. i have previously worked out my muscle and have ended up resting for a week minimum because they hurt alot. I take 2.5-3 grams of hmb 3 times a day in my shake and they work great to improve recoverly. "I like this stuff. It has increased my strength by around 7% over a 2 month period. Don't expect miracles, some reviews talk of massive increases in strength and size! Maybe - but I think not. If your brand new to training then maybe this would explain such gains as your strength increases rapidly from a new start before leveling out. HMB would be the top of the tree in all stores and on all websites if it was providing 20% increase's in strength! plus every pro athlete on earth would be taking it - in fact, it would already be a banned substance. Back to reality - It is however in my top 3 - It will give you modest gains if used correctly. As with all my powders I just eat this stuff straight from the bag and swig it down with some juice - its the harshest tasting popular supplement there is so it really taints any drink you put it into - just get it down ya! "I Totally agree with Andrew, This is my first review and HMB do work!! I have taken this every day with Isolated whey protein and have notice big result in terms of Strength and have gained 1stone in mass. I train 5 times a week with 2 days with CV work...and have gained approx 15% in strength and fast recovery!!! Prior to My protein i was using Maxi-muscle cyclone and didn't notice much result (guess they only use small amount of hmb). HMB do work!!"

"You know when you read those 'reviews' the ones that say things like *miracle product* *you won't believe the gains* and one of the best I've read *stamina in the gym...and the bedroom*....you end up buying the product and 'hope' it makes a difference. Well...this does. I have changed nothing. my routine, my diet,protien/carbs intake, my life....nothing. But I have used HMB for a month. Each and every week of that month my bench press has increased. I'm lifting 10kg more for 5-6 reps than I was a month ago. After no change for over 4 months. My chest is fuller. "I've now been taking hmb for 7 weeks ,it arrived 3 days after ordering it. I've been taking it alongside creatine monohydrate and while I was sticking to my diet i started getting ripped within 4-7 days noticable difference,but the last 3 weeks over christmas i've stayed the same because i've ate like c*ap. But my strenght has improved alot over the full 7 weeks but thats proberly due to the monohydrate. I recommend it but only if your going to eat sensibly."

As a review of HMB itself it is ok - it wont replace hard work and a good diet but it will reduce recovery time and breakdown a bit. As a review of MP - excellent the product in it's most basic form at the most competetive price with the least sci fi bullsh1t - well done. Taste - come on - any medicine that works has to taste bad.

"OK, This stuff tastes vial no way around that. If you can keep it down mixed with water you are a better man than me. I have found that mixing it in with a protein shake works well. Mixing with grape or orange juice also works but you still get the after tatse in your mouth. Just tried the berry blast that is designed for this and it works wonders. A worthy investment unless you like gagging. Lasts for ever and well worth the money"

Been taking HMB three times each day for a couple of weeks and cannot really tell if it is doing anything yet. Tastes OK when mixed with either Impact Whey or Bedtime. The one thing I have noticed is that my fingernails appear to be growing quicker...\nIt is pretty cheap so I will continue taking it for a couple of months to see what happens.

"Got some the other day with great service from MP. It smells like White Gloss paint which is pretty weird but doesn't taste too bad (definately not as bad as Creatine Ethyl Ester). You need to give it a good stir to get it to mix though. Only been on the stuff for a couple of days so cant comment on the effects just yet. However, after researching the product I would say it is definately worth trying it out."
