Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) are Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. They are considered to be essential amino acids because humans could not survive unless they were present in their diet.

BCAAs are required to maintain lean tissue and studies have shown that they help to preserve your stores of glycogen. BCAAs also prevent tissue breakdown during training.

Unlike other amino acids BCAAs are not metabolised in the stomach and are instead metabolised directly in the muscle. This unique quality means that they build lean tissue and stop catabolism. These unique amino acids (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine) cannot be synthesised by your body so they are essential to your growth.

Don't like the taste of BCAA powder? Why not try our BCAA+ Tablets.

You can increase the effectiveness of BCAAs by consuming 10mg of Vitamin B6 with every 10g of BCAA.

Key Benefits

  • Helps maintain lean tissue
  • Can boost lean mass

There seems to be too much enphasis being put on the taste of this product, if you are looking for a refreshing drink do not purchase this. However if you are serious about building some muscle this is an essential, you will defenetly see results. I find that the simplest way to take this is by putting it on your tongue and washing down with water.

Don't understand why people are complaining. Get a small glass, a tiny bit of water, put a small mp scoop (2.5g) of bcaa in, mix it a bit and down it. Repeat. I take 5g before and 5g after workout and so far so good! Soon will start taking intra also. Not the most convenient and tastes like s**t but just do it!

Excellent product. Okay it doesn't taste nice but that's how raw bcaa tastes. Just spoon it into your mouth and drink a glass of water straight away and it's gone. There's bcaa powders out there with flavour by they're twice the price. The products should be rated on effectiveness and this product works. Plain and simple!! Increased strength and endurance. Worth the taste!

I will be honest as with everything but if you add this to your protein/carb and creatine shake, the bitter taste will overpower the shake. In a blender it will mix but drink it out the shaker and it's like eating sand. Seems to be working but please improve the taste as its awful!!!

Don't bother putting in a drink as it doesn't mix and it'll ruin the flavour. Surprisingly, I found the best way is to put a teaspoon of it into your mouth and wash it down with some red bull. You don't taste it and it makes a really good pre workout drink.

Use 10g intra-workout mixed with half a scoop of Dextrose, blackcurrant squash & water. Tastes fine like this. Really effective product & one i will continue to use as its cheaper & more convenient than the BCAA+ tablets. Better recovery, reduces DOMS & helps stave of catabolism.

The mixability is impossible as the BCAA's are insoluble. BUT! If you add a tablespoon of lecithin to 10g of BCAA in your shaker, add 200ml water and shake like crazy and set aside for an hour, it will mostly disolve. The add some flavouring (squash or other) and you are good to go!

Ok, Ive brought this along with the Gel Capsules and the Capsule Maker as well - this is the only way to ingest such a product - mixing it in a shaker is a waste of time and you'll never drink it again. Ok, I have to take 8 of the homemade gel capsules to get the same 5g amount, but I can knock those back with 2 sips of water and theres no aftertaste that makes me want to cut out my tongue - Plus the saving is great when you make your own capsules as well, I make mine up on a Sunday afternoon watching tv with the Mrs - I can get almost 500 caps done when watching a film at the same time - the gains are great as well - most important factor! I do 5g before and 5g after workout - with everything else im doing its helping to keep the muscle building strong and reduce the fat whilst helping keep me energetic and stay around the same weight. Would recommend these but get the capsules and the capsule maker as well.

I agree with all the comments saying that this product has the worst mixability ever. If you mix it as directed with water it just floats to top and gets stuck to the side of glass or shaker wich bothers me as i feel i am wasting my product. Needs some serious work on the mixability. The main thing is the product itself and it does seem to help with recovery and my lean gains. But the hassle of the mixability every day is a bit annoying. I have found the best way to take this product is with boiling hot water and a bit of suger free juice of flavouring. The boiling hot water seems to dissolve at least half of the product as where cold water doesnt dissolve any. My advise to anyone struggling with the mixability is to try this. Overall myprotien has the good quality supplements at a affordable price.

Very good product, this stuff actually works very well. I take 5g 30min before my workout and 5g during and sometimes a 3rd dose 2hours after my workout. I have seen an increase in strength ,specially with compound exercises, energy and recovery time also been much more focused in the gym but this could be due to the increase in strength. As for the taste its quite bad but I got used to it quite quick so its not to bad for me. I have an orange every time i take a dose seems to take away the taste instantly. The best way to take this is to scoop the powder straight in your mouth and wash it down with water, it tastes much worst when mixed in water before hand. A truly great product you should not go without.

These do work i have noticed an increase in strength and mass since taking this product, aswell as better endurance, also they help you sleep for some reason? I will say though that you must buy the empty gel capsules from myprotein as the powder alone tastes awful, (i take creatine spoonfuls with water but cant with this) fill the tablets yourself and take 6 pre and 6 post workout for best results. the price is amazing if you buy the 500g powder and fill the caps yourself (you can knock 200 up in half an hour watching TV) with the powder and empty gelatin caps you get 1000 pills for under £36!! almost 3 months worth, as apposed to 90 capsules of BCAA for nearly £10! definatley worth buying. You will not be dissapointed!! MYPROTEIN customer for life.

Ive got to be honest, i dont really see what the problem with the taste is. i take it 4 times per day with shakes and juice and taste very little. Anyway, enough of the taste. The product itself, wow. I am training as a body building so when i take away carbs form my diet my body starts using the muscles as fuel and i dont want that... with the BCCA's i have actually managed to enhance muscle fullness and push my arms up too 19 inches, before, they dropped down to 17.5. Great product, i always make sure i keep a supply of these.

5 STAR PRODUCT! YOU NEED THESE IN YOUR SUPPLEMENT CUPBOARD! Dosent realy mix well in water and tastes like creatine but worse, however mix it with any shake and you wont taste it at all. I mix it with anything from oats to hurricane xs ect. BCAA's are important for recovery from training and these work as well as any i have tried at a fraction of the price. I take a teaspoon mixed with a shake 4 times a day, morning, before and after training and before bed. I only take in morning and before bed on non training days. Taking these will signifacantly reduce the DOMS (delayed onset muscle sorness) and help stop catabolism while training. I did a big leg session yesterday and my legs feel just a little stiff today, where without these i spend 3-4 days with my legs wrecked. Does what it says on the tin.

After reading about BCAA's from Poliquin I started to have them pre and during my workout. Also if i do cardio on empty they're great. They help u hold onto lean muscle and help with T release which is vital for being healthy and building lean muscle. U have to have quite big doses though. try 10g before and during workout. Its also great at reducing DOMS. Thanks MP

Can't comment on the effectiveness of this product as havent had it for long enough. The taste is bad.....but I can handle this, the problem is it does not mix with ANYTHING. Every time i try it it just floats on top of the juice/water/protein shake and ends up at the bottom of the glass when done. I dont mind bad tasting powders but if i can't get it to mix with anything I can't take it so is pointless, especially if it is always left stuck to the bottom of the glass......any one got any ideas?

Cannot say anything about effectiveness, because I've always been using this product as my pre and post workout drink and I do not know how would I feel without drinking it. But I believe BCAA is the same no matter where you buy it. And I buy it from MYPROTEIN because of the huge price difference. I do want to comment on taste however. This is something terrible you put in your mouth. Screw those who say man up and swallow it. Yeah, ok, you swallow it and go to gym only to have that terrible chemical after taste in your mouth. At first i was going to throw this BCAA in the bin and buy myself BCAA capsules which are almost 3 times the price. BUT!!!!, I FOUND A SOLUTION that works miracle for me!!! I mixed it with grape juice. I can barely feel the taste of BCAA. I get grape juice from lidl, which is all together is still much cheaper than buying capsules.

Although reading all past reviews I never actually allowed all the talk about taste get to me as im rather not fussed and can take a bitter drink. BUT I can definitely say without being too over dramatic and exaggerated that this products tastes DISGUSTING! I've tried with sugar, protein shake, even spooning it then right after washing it down with pre-diluted squash. It always manages to make me wretch right after :( As far as effects, I can comment on that due to the damn taste of this thing, i've tried it more than 15 times already, but cannot get used to it. They should do a flavoured version of MP BCAA !

Very effective product, I consume about 10g during my workouts (when you don't really want a whey shake sloshing around your belly) and 10g post workout with my protein shake. Definitely noticed an increase in recovery time. Also have to say, don't be put off by the reviews complaining about the taste. I find it easily bearable on it's own in water (goes down much easier than a shot of vodka, or amy spirit for that matter), and mixed with vanilla whey protein in my post workout shake I can't taste it at all. This is definitely not a product where it's worth shelling out the extra for the caps

This is without doubt the worst tasting supplement ever conceived, it doesn't mix very well (use a myprotein shaker or mix with whey protein for best mixing results) but it DOES do the job! I have noticed some increases, increased strenght and energy during workouts and hardly any aching after. I do a heavy compound session 3 times a week and so far am managing to add weight every time to my barbell. I take this first thing in the morning with whey, then a table spoon at various times throughout the day. For a workout I drop 10 grams just before, have a whey/carb/hmb shake after, then another 10 grams of bcaa later on that evening. This stuff works but you just have to get past the taste. I have ordered some Strawberry flavouring from mp so looking forward to seeing if this improves the taste!

Helps me train harder and more frequently. I am in preseason mode for Rugby, this means weights 3/4 times per week and fitness/ballskills/contact twice, I also ride 8 miles per day. I've used whey protein for some time (myprotein whey isolate is the best I've tried) and, as good as it is for building lean mass, it doesn't get rid of the aches and pains you pick up from frequent and intense workouts. I have been amazed by BCAAs effects. Without fail I wake up every morning feeling ache free and have noticed an increase in strength and vitality. Mixability? Taste? who cares?! It's an excellent product, my suggestion is to man up and knock it back.

Well, I can’t see what all the fuss is about - mixed it with my whey before and after my workout - you can notice a slight difference in the shake taste, it is by no means as bad as everyone is making out. I’ve put the it as a 3 star as I haven’t had time to see the effects, as I said, I’ve only just received it. But the taste is NOT as bad as everyone is making out it to be. As everyone else is saying here, tastes like absolute dirt. Although I wasn't going to take it mixed, when it arrived my curiosity wanted to give it a try. First of all, it doesn't mix anyway; it clumps together on the top of your drink. And secondly the taste was so bad I had to brush my teeth after to get the taste out. Saying all that, I bought these simultaneously with Size 00 caps off eBay and saved myself some dosh in the long run. I have this stored in the large flat container which makes it easy to fill caps before I go to the gym. It's effectiveness can't be denied and helps reduce catabolism while cutting as well as aiding protein synthesis.

This product does taste of butts on its own in water and if your that bothered about taste then buy caps. However BCAA's have been proven many times to aid your gains. I personally bought this to go along side my Omega kick. As I was on a very low cal diet and needed the essentials since I couldnt get them through diet alone. I mixed the powder with fruit juice and after a bit of shaking it does mix, so for those who didnt find it mixed you just need to give it time and let it settle and trust me it will thin out. Mixing it with True Whey does dampen the taste a bit making it drinkable but I found using fruit juice in a big 700ml bottle or larger and mixing it until the clumps were gone moreeffective and more bareable. obviously the more cordial you use the less you can taste. effectivness! Well iv lost a shed load of fat over the past 5 weeks and muscle mass has stayed with me, im not pointing at BCAA's alone but I could guess it bloody well helped. Overall its a brill supplement especially if your mixing other powders with it like creatine, caffiene etc

BCAA, unfortunately, is one of those things in life we just have to deal with, no matter how much we hate it - like commuting for example!? Agreed, the taste is not great, BUT MP have spoiled us here because I can tell you this is probably the least unpleasant tasting BCAA supp I’ve used. The benefits of BCAA are undoubted really, the studies show the positive effect on muscle retention when cutting and anyone who’s used it properly while cutting will tell you, you need it in your diet! So instead of telling you it tastes like shit and smells not a lot better (we know that) I’ll give you some tips: Instead of half filling your shaker of water and adding the BCAA and shaking etc, just put the BCAA in the shaker and then add enough water for a mouthful, swirl it around a bit and knock it back like a shock, they’ll be some left over in the bottom so just repeat the process till it’s gone. I do this in two or three stages depending on how much I take and when, which leads on to my next tip. I think MP’s recommendations are a little weak, I take (and have taken for a couple of years) 5g as soon as I wake up, 10g pre-workout, 10g post workout, 5g bedtime. I’d say 30g is the bare minimum you want to be taking to really see the benefits, but 30g-40g is where you want to be aiming. Good luck,

I was with everyone else when I tried to mix this stuff with water - it doesn't mix and it is truly disgusting but I have to say... ...get over yourselves guys. Get a bit creative. I use this with whey isolate in a couple of different ways. Firstly for breakfast / pwo meal, I mix BCAAs and whey with skimmed milk and put it on oatibix with some dried fruit and blueberries - delicious. I must say you can taste the BCAAs, it adds a bitter kind of twang to it, but now I'm used to it I actually prefer it with the BCAAs in than without (I managed to run out a while ago and it wasn't as nice). I'll often have one of these as a pre-bed snack too. If I feel like having some during my workout I'll mix some with apple juice and maltodextrin and dilute it a bit with water. OK it doesn't tase like much apple juice any more but it's not unpleasant and very refreshing. Finally for a post workout shake it's unflavoured whey plus BCAAs mixed with orange juice, oats and some chocolate flavouring. Is something that good for you supposed to taste that nice? Sort of a liquid Terry's Chocolate Orange flavour - yum. Again I now prefer it with the BCAAs in than without. Yes BCAAs are disgusting if you're daft enough to try them on their own. They don't mix well with water either, but in a shaker with juice or with cereals and dried fruit / berries for flavour, they're not bad at all.

The smell is repugnant as soon as you open the pouch. I was expecting that though as I'd read the reviews. The powder is very light, airy and volumous. I mixed it 1:1:1 with Creatine and store it in tubs ready to weigh out 15g of the mix in to my workout shakes. I find that if I use ice cold water, ice cubes and shake the bottle slowly rather than going nuts, there's minimum froth, the powder does mix in eventually and the vanilla whey isolate masks the taste of the BCAAs. I graded this product a 5 because these BCAAs give unparalleled results in fending off DOMS and are critical to growing efficiently and that's way more important than the taste. The price is good and at 10g used, 3 times a week, should last 9 months per kg.

There's no doubt this tastes pretty nasty - but a tip to anyone who prefers to take bcaa's separately and wants it to mix better - try adding glycerol. I add apprx 10ml (two teaspoons) for about 15-20g of bcaa + 350ml water. Shake it up, leave to settle - shake again if necessary - after 5 minutes you will def notice the difference in improved mixability!!

Stop complaining about the taste. I agree it doesn't mix with water at all, it just floats about on the surface in little blobs, and the taste, on its own, is truly, truly disgusting but if you mix it with your protein shake it's fine. 1. stick it in your shaker with whey, oats and whatever flavours you use (I usually use orange juice and chocolate flavoured whey to get a whole liquid Terry's chocolate orange thing going - yum... but much healthier!) and it mixes perfectly and tastes fine. 2. I also mix whey and skimmed milk with BCAAs added to put on oatabix with some fruit and berries for a pre-bed snack and I now prefer the taste with BCAAs in compared with without. Slightly bitter but not unpleasant at all.

The Leucine in the BCAA is hydrophobic, therefore it is prone to floating. If you add the BCAA to something acidic, shake it up and leave it for half an hour, then it dissolves and the acidity of the juice masks the medicine flavour of the product. Take this three times a day in Orange Juice and it always mixes and never makes me gag now.

Try mixing this in a drink and you're left with half of the powder sticking to the sides of the shaker/glass. The best and easiest way to take this BCAA powder is to put a teaspoonful in your mouth, then wash it down with orange squash. Quick, easy, and no mess. The results are fantastic, I take 2 teaspoonfuls (10 grams) every 3 hours (60 grams per day) and when used with creatine I have to say I'm seriously impressed, both in terms of new lean gains and strength increases.

Works fantastic with recovery. Take two heaped teaspoons before exercise and right after and you will recover much faster. The taste is a bit on the bad side, however you get used to it. Don't mix it in your shake. Instead take a sip of the shake, take a teaspoon of the BCAA, tilt your head back, swallow and chase with the shake. You won't really taste it this way and you won't ruin your shake. If you found this useful, use **CODE REMOVED** on your next order for a discount :)

I think it's best to just fill your mouth with water and tip the scoop in. It's the only way I can have it without it coming straight back up again. Tried stirring it with water and it turned into a froth that floated on the top. Mixed it with my shake in a shaker cup and it all collected as a paste at the bottom. The quicker you get it down you the better!

This is a fantastic product to be purchasing. I give this product 4/5 overall simply because of the taste which is bearable when mixed with myproteins Impact Whey Protein but on its own is barely tolerable. I have made significant gains strength wise/energy levels but NOT WEIGHT. I add 5 grams (two tspoon) twice daily to my protein shake pre and post work (30gwhey, 5g glut, 2g leu). I have seen an increase in recovery time particular less DOMS in my forearms (prone to injury). Biceps and Chest most gains. This has enabled me to take training to the next level. GIVE THEM A TRY!!!

After using it 2 days i can keep my body recovering overnight. I am now going to the gym 2 days in a row which is good by my standard. I dont know why people complaining about the taste. My Nutritionist says the stuff that tastes good usually makes you fat haha. I use 3 small scoops bcaa, 1 large scoop hemp protein, 1 large scoop instant oats, and 2 small scoop smooth chocolate flavouring. Stick it in a mixer and shake for 1 minute. Been taking this stuff for a few days and have to say I think it has worked even in that short space of time, problem is it tastes absolutely horendous, and considering 5g is about a teaspoon full I can't see anyway of taking it. It ruins the flavour of protein shakes by adding a very bitter taste to them, and doesn't mix well with anything. I would have thought you would need to have an awful lot of capsules to get through 5g 3 or 4 times a day. The only solution I have tried that seems to work reasonably well is adding the powder to a small amount of pro-biotic yoghurt, and just spoon it down without trying to savour the taste.

Just tried 5 grams of BCAA with 200ml water and a fairly strong serving of Robinsons Orange and it didn't actually taste that bad. BCAA's are an excellent supplement when used before and post workout for reducing soreness and promoting good recovery. The taste isn't exactly wonderous but you do get used it.\n\nAlso, BCAA's are improved with the addition of extra Leucine (the most potent BCAA) when mixed at a 2.1 BCAA/Leucine ratio, although the Leucine makes the blend less easy to mix.

Everyone has their own ideas about supplements but it seems pretty much agreed that the three you REALLY need are creatine and BCAA. I'm not so sure about the creatine but then again I'm a vegetarian so maybe it's just bringing me up to what I'm supposed to get from meat anyway. Aminoacids work, despite those who say it's destroyed in the gut, and in my case means no or very minimal DOMS plus the ability to train flat-out every day so long as I also stay off the beer. Without aminoacids it's every other day. At present I'm minimising calories to lose fat and this usually trades off to mean less energy and more tiredness during workouts. BCAA fixes this little problem however by doing its anti-catabolic thing and forcing the body to burn that fat for energy instead of lazily just grabbing glycogen. I have a few grams morning and evening but during workouts I just drink as much as I want of about 15 grams of BCAA dissolved in a litre of water. It's extremely fast-acting and you can literally tell the difference in lack of tiredness and increased motivation to get on with it. Incidentally the powder is better value than tablets so don't be put off by stories of the terrible taste. It's not wonderful (slightly bitter) but tolerably OK, and in fact I find it's perfectly complemented by adding Robinsons Pink Grapefruit Fruit and Barley squash if you don't mind the tiny few extra calories. BCAA does not like to mix easily and granules sort of cling to the surface of the water but adding the Robinsons seems to correct that as well!
